Introductions: Allie

My name is Allie.
I am a reader, writer, and musician, as well as an IVCC graduate. I was also the editor-in-chief of River Currents for the 2016-2017 school year.

Now that I’ve graduated with my two-year degree I’m preparing to continue to get a degree in music education with a minor in English. So, as a music major, why am I so interested in English?

I was homeschooled before attending IVCC. I spent every spare moment (when I wasn’t doing school work or playing with my brother) devouring as many books as I could get my hands on. I spent most of my time with classics such as Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, A Little Princess by Francis Hodgson Burnett, and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. I loved stories so much, I knew that I needed to write my own. I’ve been writing fiction since I was about eleven years old starting with a highly ambitious project where I planned to detail the different battles of the American Revolution. I’ve since drifted away from historical fiction into fantasy but I love both genres and hope to work with both in the future.

I mentioned that I and majoring in music education. I’ve been playing the piano for seventeen years and singing (though without formal training) for twenty-three. I’ve also experimented with violin, flute, and percussion. I’ve already had the joy of teaching piano lessons and I love teaching, thus I’m going for music education.

As I write this post, I am less than a month away from moving to Western Illinois University which is both exciting and terrifying.  Juggling music, writing, and school can be a lot at times, but it’s a challenge that I thoroughly enjoy. I’m looking forward to this new adventure in my life and I can’t wait to see how it shapes both my music and my writing.
